1.

Zoe hadn’t slept through the night since Miranda. Without her husband’s solid presence to keep away the nightmares, she felt like she was drowning in them every night. She began to pace the ship, studying it in a way she never really had. She’d run her hands along the cool metal and try to see what her captain saw in this home of theirs. One night, Zoe found herself in the engine room. Before she knew it, she was opening her eyes to a new day. She’d finally found a heartbeat as steady as his to lull her to sleep.

2.

Cameron Mitchell was in love. Not the childish kind he’d felt for Lizzie Owens, his next-door neighbor and sometimes babysitter. Not the lustful kind he felt for, well, most of the women he’d slept with. No, this was a mature love, solid and unending. Every night, his dreams were full of her. He’d imagine all the adventures they could have together, all the places she could take him. Every time he laid eyes on her, his spirit would be lifted in a way he just couldn’t describe. Cam walked through the ‘gate and smiled. Yep, this was it. True love.

3.

Hobbes loved women. He had a special weakness for blondes with deliciously long legs who carried guns and weren’t afraid to call him on his bullshit. But wanting to screw a beautiful woman was natural. Too bad he wanted more. He wanted to watch her back and not just because she looked great from that angle but because he hated the thought of anything happening to her. He knew she was trouble the moment they met and part of him wished she’d pulled the trigger that day and saved him from this fate. Love. What a pain in the ass.

4.

River was terrified of love. It was an unknown, something that couldn’t be quantified or categorized. It was something that didn’t seem to have any rules and could turn the strongest of people into blubbering boobs. And there were so many different types of love, how was one to choose which was the best option? Was it the solid, committed love Zoe and Wash shared? Or the awkward, shy affection Simon had for Kaylee? Was it the hidden, confusing feelings Mal had for Inara? Or the passionate lust Jayne had for his guns? River hoped she would never find out.

5.

Cameron watched Sarah load their truck with the tools they’d need for the mission. Guns, and lots of them, explosives, duck tape, copper wire, a couple of hand-grenades, lighter fluid, rope, blue-prints, several sheets of plastic, and a box of fountain pens. Sarah pulled on her gloves, tightened the laces of her boots, shrugged on her jacket, and climbed into the driver’s seat. Cameron slid in next to her and wondered if their life would always be like this. She hoped it would and maybe that’s all love was: the hope that they could stay together, fighting to live on.

6.

John was a lucky man. He had a healthy, happy little boy and a gorgeous, slightly scary wife who would fight to the death for both of them, as would he. ‘Course, he hoped it would never come to that, for all of their sakes. The war was over for now and John planned to take full advantage of that fact. Aeryn didn’t quite understand John’s need to have sex in every nook and cranny of their ship but she was happy to participate. Occasionally, he would joke about having more children and eventually, Aeryn actually smiled at the thought.

7.

Kaylee’d fallen for boys plenty a’times but things were different with Simon. At first, she’d thought it was just a crush but when he started to bother her more than most guys did, Inara told her that was a sign she felt somethin’ real strong. She knew it for sure the day he and River disappeared from town. She’d never felt so relieved than when they came back, whole n’ healthy. Kaylee didn’t know if Simon felt the same way and he weren’t one to say so if he did, but she’d keep tryin’. Weren’t nothing worth having came easy.

8.

Dee cradled Hera in her lap as the child drifted off to sleep. She wrapped a finger around one of Hera’s tiny curls and tried to imagine what Hera would be like as she grew up. Would she be kind and honest like her father? Would she have her mother’s strength? Would the love of her parents be enough to keep her safe and happy? Dee hummed a melody she remembered her father had sung to her as a child and grieved over the knowledge that she’d never sing that song to her own children. Maybe in the next life.

9.

Juliet glanced over the top of her book and watched James concentrate on his own. She never thought life on the island could be like this, so calm and content. That they could sit in their living room and read their favorite books without worrying about smoke monsters or cages or Benjamin Linus. Occupied with her own thoughts, she didn’t notice that James had put his book down and begun watching her. When their eyes met, all thoughts of books and life musings were pushed aside to focus on who could undress the other faster. Yes, their life was good.

10.

Whenever the pain began to overtake her, someone would be there to hold her hand or wipe her brow or distract her with old war stories. Most people would pity Inara for the illness that ravaged her body but she felt blessed. She had so many people who loved her and gave her strength whenever her own wasn’t enough. She’d lived a very content life and met the most fascinating people who shaped her into the woman she was. She loved them all and took great comfort in the knowledge that she would be remembered fondly when she was gone.
