hobbitofkobol for Whedonland's fic-fest. This is my first attempt at a 5-times piece, as well as my first time writing in the Whoverse. Hopefully, it's not too terrible:)
The 5 Times Tosh Kissed Someone Inappropriate and the Time She Did Not
One
When she went to his office that day, Tosh knew she had not been called in to discuss her research paper. Despite the popular opinion, Tosh was not that naïve. She knew that her maths professor fancied her. Could feel his gaze as it lingered on her form, day after day. And she had become a pro at ignoring it.
Until that morning, when she had dropped her pen during his lecture. They both bent down to pick it up and his nose had grazed her cheek. Tosh smiled at the sensation, an involuntary response she could not control, and her professor noticed.
He made sure that when she took her pen from him, his fingers brushed hers just long enough to send sparks up her left arm and down through the rest of her body.
That afternoon in his office, their lips met and she allowed herself to be lost in his desire. The next morning, she transferred out of his class.

It was New Year’s Eve. She was drunk (or close to it). There was mistletoe. And even though Owen returned the kiss with double the intensity, Tosh knew the love was one-sided. She knew Owen would never see her as anything more than a colleague. Still, she felt giddy every time she remembered Owen breaking their kiss out of embarrassment. Apparently, he enjoyed it even more than she expected.

With Mary, it was all about the loneliness. The need to feel accepted, to feel connected to another human being. And even when Tosh learned that the beautiful woman she kissed was actually a beautiful alien, she was not put off. What bothered Tosh, what woke her in the night, was the sense of betrayal. She was forced to accept the truth about Mary’s manipulation at knife-point. Perhaps she was wrong. Perhaps she was just as naïve as everyone believed her to be.

Tosh pressed the glass to her lips and was shocked to discover that she could see the bottom of it. When had she finished this one?
“They don’t deserve us you know,” Ianto slurred.
Tosh nodded and handed him her glass for another re-fill. How many was it this time? She could not recall.
“We are two young, attractive people,” Ianto continued. “And they are just stupid boys guided by hormones.”
“I bet they’re out shagging right now,” Tosh commented.
“Each other?” Ianto asked, clearly confused.
“No,” Tosh scoffed. “Maybe.”
“D’ya think they even knew what today was?” Ianto asked between shots.
“Don’t think Valentine’s Day makes much of a splash in the date-book of Captain Jack Harkness,” Tosh said. “And Owen doesn’t even own a calendar.”
“We should move on,” Ianto shouted. “Find us someone who appreciates us.”
“Not likely with our line of work,” Tosh said.
“Torchwood is the ultimate cock-blocker, that’s for sure,” Ianto agreed. “Course, we could just try it with each other.”
Tosh almost choked on that last swallow. When she stopped coughing, she looked at him in confusion. “You and me? You really think we should go there?”
Ianto answered her question with a sloppy kiss. It could have been pleasant enough had they been sober but the alcohol caused a lack of coordination. When they broke from the kiss, Ianto looked deep into her eyes. “Anything?” he asked.
“S’was nice,” Tosh offered. “I’ve had worse.”
“It was horrible,” Ianto moaned. “Sorry,” he apologized when he saw the sting of rejection on her face. “It’s not your fault. It’s just…He’s ruined me for anyone else. Stupid man had millennia to practice his technique.”
“Is he really all that good?” Tosh asked. She had always wondered if it was all hype.
“Yeah,” Ianto sighed. “And I bet he’s proving it with someone else right now.”
“Bastard,” Tosh mumbled as she finished the last of the tequila.
“So’s Owen,” Ianto said. They clinked their empty glasses in solidarity. “At least we won’t wind up old spinsters with 15 cats.”
“Bloody Torchwood,” Tosh murmured. “Least it’s good for something.”
Five
“Owen, I am not leaving you to face that thing on your own,” Tosh said.
Her heart was pounding so hard she could barely breathe. Owen was about to face down death itself and she was the only thing standing in his way.
“I know what to do,” Owen said.
“We don’t even know what we’re dealing with…” Before Tosh could finish her argument, Owen silenced her with a kiss. The rest of the world melted away as Owen’s lips met hers and she lost all sense of time and place.
When he broke the kiss (too soon for her liking), Tosh could not think straight.
“You’re so gonna hate me for this,” Owen said, as the door closed between them.
Tosh was furious at him for sure…but Owen was wrong. No matter what he did, no matter how badly he hurt her or how many times he pushed her away, Tosh would never feel anything but love for that man.
Zero
“You know you can’t resist me,” he said, smile widening.
“I am immune to your charms,” Tosh said, focusing on the computer screen in front of her. After all, she was able to resist him for the past three months since she had been working for Torchwood.
“Impossible,” Jack scoffed, hands on hips. “No one can turn down all of this.” He made a sweeping gesture with his left hand to show off his impressive figure.
“Nope, doesn’t do it for me,” Tosh said, trying her hardest to keep a straight face.
“How about this?” Jack said, spinning her around in her chair. He kneeled down in front of her and pulled the chair toward him. “You go on one date with me and I promise I’ll show you that new tech I acquired just this morning.”
He certainly was tricky wasn’t he, Tosh thought. He’d seen her eyeing that strange device all afternoon.
She sat up in her chair and adjusted her glasses.
“Ooh…You would make one sexy librarian, wouldn’t you?” Jack teased.
“Please, like you haven’t played out that fantasy a hundred times before,” Tosh said.
“Oh but I bet you’d put ‘em all to shame,” Jack said, moving his face ever-so-slightly closer to hers.
Tosh closed her eyes and breathed in his extraordinary scent. “Hmm,” she sighed.
“Is that a yes, Miss Sato?” Jack asked.
Tosh opened her eyes and stared at him for a long moment. The electricity he was emanating could power the city of Cardiff for a year. Tosh leaned forward and whispered in his ear using the sultriest voice she could muster, “Sorry, captain but you’re just not my type.”
Before he could form a coherent thought, Tosh grabbed several files from her desk and whipped past him. She could feel his gaze on her as she walked up the stairs and she smiled as if she could see the look of shock plastered on his handsome face.
Toshiko Sato would go down in history as the one person who turned down the enigmatic Captain Jack Harkness.

Date: 2009-09-11 08:00 pm (UTC)And wow, that's some will power she has if she can resist Captain Jack. ;D
You did a great job giving a glimpse of each relationship. Poor Tosh always got the short end of the stick in the romance department, didn't she? It was a shame...I wanted to see her happy.

Date: 2009-09-11 09:11 pm (UTC)Tosh/Owen = one of my all-time favorite ships so I loved writing for them. And I've always wanted to write something where Tosh was immune to Jack's mojo :D
Based on your fic information, I originally wanted to do a crossover between Dollhouse/Torchwood where Topher was so upset by their deaths in Exit Wounds that he imprinted two of the dolls with their personalities so they could have some closure :D. Alas, I suck at crack!fic and couldn't find a way to make it work:)
